Marie Johnson

Marie Johnson passed away on January 23, 2022, after living a long and full life of 99 years. She was born on August 30, 1922, to Boy Hinrich and Ane Kirstine (Kragh) Jessen at the family’s farmhouse in Froslev, Denmark. She was nearly 4 years old when she emigrated with her family from Denmark to Cozad, NE, and then eventually settled on a farm on the north edge of Lexington.

She graduated from Lexington High School and Grand Island Business College in May, 1943. She worked at the Air Base in Grand Island for a year, then as a clerk/typist at hospitals in Santa Monica and West Los Angeles, California. She was employed at the hospital for Tuberculosis patients in Kearney, NE until April, 1947 when she met Quentin. She worked for the Department of Labor in Lincoln, as an accounting Clerk from April, 1947 to May, 1948.

She married Quentin Johnson on May 8, 1948. She was a home maker and mother of five children. In 1969 she went back to work as a secretary for food services at the University of Nebraska (Harper-Schram-Smith dormitories). She was employed at Raymond Central Public Schools for 2 years, then worked at the Midwest Archeological Center for the National Park Service in Lincoln until her retirement in 2000.  She and Quentin lived on the farm near Ceresco, until the fall, 2014, when they moved to a senior condominium at Northgate in Lincoln.

Marie took home landscaping courses, and much of her spare time was spent doing flower gardening, planting trees, and growing roses. She created a business “Johnson’s Greenhouse” and loved to do arrangements and wedding flowers.

She was a member of the Rose Society and was in the Danish sisterhood, Lincoln Chapter, for 40 years. Marie was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as church secretary. Her Christian faith was very important to her. Her Danish heritage was also an important part of her life. Marie and Quentin enjoyed traveling and went to Europe and Denmark several times over the years.  

She is survived by two sons, Eric (Connie) and Wes Johnson; three daughters, Anne (Rick) Rivers, Jean (Jessie) Carroll, and Ellen (Gary) Vorderstrasse. Grandchildren include Melinda Powell, Tracy Paine, Heather Berry, Christie Henry, Julie Zobec, Craig Zobec, Shelly Severson, Kale Johnson, Brandon Miller, Corey Miller, and Shane Vorderstrasse. Eight great-grandchildren: Luke Paine, Alicia Waldrep, Jake and Zach Zobec, Joey, Skylar, and Peyton Severson, and Maci Maxson. She is also survived by three brothers, Arne, Carl, and Pete Jessen, Two sisters, Ellie Knuth and Helga Hanson.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Quentin, brothers Henry, Nis, and Al Jessen, sisters Johanna Olsen, Dorthea Yeutter, and Dagny Duus.

Memorial Service 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 216 Main Street, Ceresco, NE.

Burial at Swedeburg Lutheran Cemetery
