Sandra “Sandy” Kay Yonkey, boldly passed away on August 20, 2021 to be with her Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Home at last. Sandy was born on January 4, during the blizzard of 1949, to Herman and Phyllis (Small) Fredericksen in Lexington, Nebraska. They were fortunate to follow a snowplow from Cozad to Lexington hospital for the birth of their first baby.
A 1967 Cozad NE High School graduate, Sandy made lifetime friends there and enjoyed pep club and band. She work for American Labs in Lexington and Lincoln, after she graduated from North Platte Community College. On September 14, 1985, Sandy married Darrell Yonkey, a Lincoln native. Sandra loved the city life of Lincoln and her flower gardens at their home there.
Both she and Darrell were passionate Schnauzer dog parents and frequently walked with their dog family in their neighborhood and nearby parks. They also traveled and camped RV style. Always ready for fun in everything, especially going out for dinner, playing cards, chess, and board games at family get-togethers. Sandy always laughed and kept family and friends laughing too. She just made people feel good about themselves. Her love for the deaf community at Capitol Christian Church in Lincoln was a longstanding purpose and ministry in her life. She was their sister, friend, teacher, and sign language interpreter.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her husband, Darrell Yonkey, of Lincoln, NE; sisters, Sharon (Greg) Howerter, of Chadron, NE, and Carla (Chuck) Johnston, of Fredericksburg, VA; sister-in-law, Beverly Hessheimer, of Lincoln, NE; niece, Joette (Eric) Fuller, of Chadron, NE; nephews, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Howerter, of Cozad, NE, Darin Hessheimer, and Kevin Hessheimer, of Lincoln, NE; 6 grandnieces, Micaiah, Makinley, Sydney, Jentsyn, Addison, Emma; as well as, several cousins in Nebraska, Texas, California, and Washington State.
Funeral Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26, 2021 at Capitol City Christian Church, 7800 Holdrege Street, Lincoln, NE.
Burial at Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, NE.
