Charles Kenneth Botts Sr. was born January 5, 1930 in Beatrice, Nebraska to the proud parents of Holbert William Botts and my mother’s name was Mattie Artimichal (Duncan) Botts.
Charles and his parents relocated to Lincoln Nebraska when he was 3 years old. He matriculated through the Lincoln Public Schools and was a proud Lincoln High School Alumnae. Soon after, he enlisted in the Navy. Completing a tour of duty from 1948-1952, he was stationed in San Diego, CA, was on three ships in the Pacific, Hawaii, China, Phillipines, and Japan.
Upon returning to Nebraska, he worked in various capacities; on the railroad as a fill-in the 1950’s, a Watkins salesman, a television repairman, worked for YMCA as a janitor. He finished his career at Cushman working for 40 years in the aluminum plant as a smelter; the metal used for 3-wheel scooters. In his leisure time, Bro. Botts thoroughly enjoyed reading God’s word and working around the house.
Bro. Botts professed his faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In later years, he united with the Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Michael W. Combs. Shortly after joining the Church he met and married Laureen Barnett Botts on October 27, 1992. He and Sister Botts were happily married for 28 years. Together, they enjoyed traveling, attending various events in the Lincoln community, surveying scripture and attending the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education.
Bro. Botts was one of God’s faithful servants serving in various capacities in the Church. He served as a Sunday School teacher for the Senior class for over 10 years and as the assistant teacher to the Adult Sunday School class. Bro. Botts was an avid Bible scholar, often quoting both Bible stories and scriptures that lend themselves to healing the broken and the downhearted. In these various roles, many souls were led to Christ as he diligently stressed the importance of Salvation and living a life that was pleasing to God. Bro. Botts served as a deacon dutifully and humbly living the life that he sang and prayed about until his health failed him. His favorite Hymn was “Your Grace and Mercy – brought me through”. One of his greatest joys was attending Church and praising God and fellow shipping with his co laborers in Christ of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church family.
Bro. Botts departed this life on Saturday June 5th, 2021. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, one sister and one brother. He leaves to cherish fond memories, a devoted wife Laureen Barnett Botts, two daughters; Leslie Botts and Uvonne Botts; Lincoln, NE. one son, Charles Botts II, Boston, MA., two nieces Regina Vialet, and Leatrice Shelton, Boise, ID. and a host of grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
