Girlie Gene Hughes

Girlie Gene Hughes was born on September 29,1938, in Fayette, Alabama, and called to glory on December 16, 2020. He was the son of Gurley and Wilma (Wilson) Hughes. Gene attended Fayatte County Training School and was the only son in his family to graduate high school. He was baptized in a creek in Fayette, Alabama. He dedicated his life to Christ at an early age and joined Unity Grove Baptist church in Fayette, AL. He moved to Lincoln at the age of 22, and eventually became church deacon for Angelic Temple. One of his favorite things to do was to read scripture, and one of his proudest achievements was reading the bible on multiple occasions from front to back. Gene was the golden representation of hard work. He proudly drove the city bus for over 20 years and retired from Star Tran bus company with a full pension. He was also an avid fisherman and lover of sports, especially football and basketball. He loved to travel back to his home town and would pack his family in the car for road trips across the country every summer. Later in life, he loved to spend time with his beloved dog Sally Mae. They would walk trails together and he would always brag that she was fast enough to catch a bird out of the air! He was Preceded in death by his parents Gurley & Wilma Hughes , brothers; Katheree Hughes, James "Tiny' Hughes , sisters; Margaret Cannon , Dollie Snyder , Sarah Pruitt , Roxie Battle , and Lillian Hughes; many friends and loved ones. He will be missed by all who knew him. Gene leaves to cherish his memory a loving family: Karen Hughes (wife), Howey "Neal" Hughes (Evalina)brother; Gene Hughes (Nantana) son; Monica Hughes-White (Torin) daughter; Maranda Wiemers (Paul Brown) daughter; Wilma Hughes (Ralph Pleasant) daughter; Melvin Hughes-Williams (Sacha Washington) son; Renee Langston daughter; and Dennis Hughes nephew. Special family friends: Debroah Hinds, , Vadie Kirkendoll, Terence & Annette Peden, Iris Hughes and Tina Shepard. He had 11 grand-children, nieces, nephews, and many special family and friends.
