Herbert E. Grabau

Herbert E. Grabau, 83, Omaha, formerly of Rock Island, Ill. and Lincoln, died Wednesday (2/6/08) in Omaha. He was born May 29, 1924 in Chester, Neb. to Ernest and Clara (Pieschke) Grabau. He was an elementary education teacher for more than 46 years; organist, music director and mixed choir and men's choral director. Herb was a graduate of Concordia University, Seward, in 1945. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 1969. Herb taught in Lutheran Schools for over forty years, first at Bethel Lutheran School at Detroit, Michigan, followed by Redemption Lutheran School also of Detroit. Herb then taught at Zion Lutheran School at Leigh, Neb., and Mt. Calvary Lutheran School at Omaha, Immanuel Lutheran School at Rock Island, Ill., Trinity Lutheran School, and Faith Lutheran School, Lincoln. Herb had a passion for music and for 60 years he was an organist and choir director. He did much composing and arranging of music for his choirs. He had many other hobbies of which some were gardening, art related activities, quilting, and traveling. Herbert was married on August 4, 1946 to Amanda Poppe at Chester, Neb. She preceded him in death on November 15, 1999. On September 6, 2003, he married Ingeborg Perlebach of Omaha. Survivors include: wife, Ingeborg, Omaha; daughter, Angelynn Grabau, Eagan, Minn.; step-son, Dr. George Perlebach, Omaha; step-daughter, Camilla Plock, Germany; step-grandchildren, John and Anya Perlebach, Omaha, Dr. Kristin Zinkel, Germany; brother and sister-in-law, Merton and Irma Grabau, Owatonna, Minn.; sister, Louanna Doering, Deshler, Neb. He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Amanda Poppe Grabau. Visitation from 5 - 8 p.m. Sunday at Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln. Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, (2/11/08) at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 5529 Leavenworth Street, Omaha, Nebraska with Pastor Richard Gudgel officiating. Family will greet friends immediately prior to services at the church on Monday. Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lincoln Memorial Park, Lincoln. Please meet at Gate #2. Memorials to: The Lutheran Hour; or Trinity Lutheran School (Lincoln); or Faith Lutheran School (Lincoln); or Mt. Calvary Lutheran School (Omaha).
